RegexMagic, a new tool to create regular expressions for beginners

There's a new tool to create regular expressions on the market: RegexMagic. This tool has been created by Jan Goyvaerts (Belgium), who is also the maker of RegexBuddy and other great tools. RegexMagic makes creating regular expressions easier than ever. With this tool you don't have to deal with the regular expression syntax at all. RegexMagic generates complete regular expressions to your specifications.

I use RegexBuddy a lot, so I decided to download RegexMagic today. The price for this tool isn't that high, just 19 Euros at the moment. I will buy the tool after the trial period.

 

It's very simple to work with RegexMagic. All you have to do is type some text, mark some elements in this text and click on Regex Use > Generate. I'm certain this tool will have it's use while working with tools like Encase!

Regular Expressions Cookbook

The Regular Expressions Cookbook is in stock at Amazon.com. The book covers the regular expression flavors .NET, Java, JavaScript, Perl, PCRE, Python, and Ruby, and the programming languages C#, Java, JavaScript, Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby, and VB.NET. After a quick introduction, the book starts with a detailed regular expression tutorial which equally covers all 7 regex flavors. That chapter is followed by a detailed guide how to implement regular expressions in your source code, again covering the 8 programming languages equally. These chapters too are presented in cookbook format.

Regular Expressions met PSPad

Als je met programma's zoals Encase en FTK (Imager) gebruik wilt zoeken met behulp van Grep (regular expressions), dan is het handig om eerst te kijken of je zoektermen wel werken. Niets is namelijk zo vervelend als het uitblijven van zoekresultaten danwel het krijgen van een hoop false positives. Vooral als dat komt omdat je gebruik hebt gemaakt van een verkeerde Grep expressie. Ik maak daarom gebruik van het freeware PSPad om mijn regular expressions eerst uit te proberen, voordat ik ze toe ga passen in Encase of FTK Imager.

FTK Imager en regular expressions

FTK Imager blijft me verrassen met diens mogelijkheden. Ik heb me de laatste tijd een beetje verdiept in regular expressions (wellicht beter bekend als GREP), en FTK Imager blijkt daar zeer goed mee om te kunnen gaan. Véél beter dan bijvoorbeeld Encase.
